CALGARY -- The Crown says the parents of a teen who died of starvation and untreated diabetes should have known their lack of care would end in their son's death and are guilty of murder.

Emil Radita, who is 59, and his wife, Rodica, who is 54, have pleaded not guilty of first-degree-murder in the 2013 death of 15-year-old Alexandru.

The teen, who was one of eight children, weighed just 37 pounds when he died.

In her closing arguments to a Calgary court, prosecutor Susan Pepper says the parents failed to provide the treatment their son needed leaving him extremely weak and totally dependant on them.

She says he was as dependent as an infant in the end.

Pepper says by failing to provide Alexandru with food, insulin, and medical care, they intended to kill him or intended to cause him bodily harm.
