Police have yet to identify suspects or a motive for a shooting at a Calgary New Year's Eve party that left one young man dead and six wounded.

Insp. Ryan Ayliffe told reporters Friday that police are still trying to piece together what happened and that not all of the witnesses are co-operating with investigators.

He appealed to those with any information about the shooting to come forward.

Shots rang out at a home in the 1900 block of 36 St. S.W. at 5 a.m. Thursday, bringing a New Year's celebration to a violent end.

Family members have identified the fatally wounded victim as Abdullahi Ahmed, who was in his mid-20s and was of Somalian heritage. He had moved to Calgary from Toronto six or seven years ago.

Ahmed was shot in the forehead, his family said.

The six other victims remain in hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Their ages range from early 20s to early 30s.

One of those victims wasn’t even at the party. Ayliffe said someone passing by the house in a car was also shot, but is expected to survive.

Ayliffe said investigators believe the shooting was a “targeted” but isolated incident. They are still trying to determine the motive and can’t say whether the shooting was gang-related.

Residents of the Killarney neighbourhood, located about six kilometres southwest from Calgary's downtown core, were shaken to see police tape lining an otherwise quiet street on New Year's Day.

"I’m pretty shocked," resident Mitchell Sanders told reporters at the scene. "I really didn’t think that this was that type of neighbourhood."

When police first arrived at the scene Thursday morning, they found five people with gunshot wounds both inside and out of the home. Two other victims later showed up at nearby hospitals. They were also suffering from gunshot wounds.

More than 50 people were at the party, and police spent much of Thursday questioning those who remained at the scene following the shooting.

Ayliffe said another fatal shooting in Calgary on Friday does not appear to be related to the house party shooting.

A man was found dead in an alley in the 1400 block of 8th street N.W. after officers responded to a call about gunshots. Ayliffe said there seems to be no link between the two incidents, although investigators are “keeping an open mind.”

Witnesses can call 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-222-8477 (TIPS).
