A man has been charged after police say they clocked a BMW travelling 229 km/h down a highway in Mississauga, Ont.

The 22-year-old "novice driver" was driving a BMW along Highway 403 near Eglinton Avenue early Friday morning, according to Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

He was pulled over shortly after 1 a.m. and was later charged with stunt driving and other violations. His licence was suspended and his vehicle was impounded as well, Schmidt told CTV Toronto's John Musselman.

A few hours later, police stopped a driver in Mercedes who was travelling along Highway 400 at approximately 200 km/h.

The 29-year-old driver was pulled over near Finch Avenue and charged with stunt and careless driving.

"This type of behaviour is not only putting the driver at risk, but everybody else on the highway as well," Schmidt said.

Weekend safety blitz across Ontario

Provincial police will be closely monitoring the highways this weekend as part of a road safety blitz campaign.

Officers in marked and unmarked cars will cracking down on motorists in "Operation Impact."

They'll be looking for drivers who are: distracted, impaired, aggressive, or driving without a seatbelt. Police said 78 per cent of road deaths in 2014 have been as a result of one or more of those factors.
