Moncton shooting: Hour by Hour
A detailed breakdown of the Moncton shooting that began Wednesday evening, and an hour-by-hour account of the investigation that is ongoing as of Thursday afternoon.
Wednesday, June 4
7:30 p.m. - Police respond to calls of an armed man in camouflage in the north end of the city of Moncton.
8:12 p.m. - The New Brunswick branch of RCMP tweets the following: #Codiac #RCMPNB advises the public in the Hildegard / Ryan Raod area to remain inside due to an ongoing shooting in the area.
8:27 p.m. - Public Relations Specialist Tracy Bell confirms that there was a multiple shooting incident in Moncton’s north end. Additional paramedic crews have been staffed near the scene and are ready to respond.
8:30 p.m. - Georges-L. Dumont University Hospital declares a Code Orange, the expectation of multiple casualties coming into the emergency room.
8:46 p.m. - Moncton Hospital is locked down. No confirmed information on casualties.
9:17 p.m. - The RCMP reveal on Twitter that they are searching for 24-year-old Justin Bourque of Moncton and that he is “considered armed and dangerous.”
9:39 p.m. –An RCMP spokesman tells the Canadian Press that two RCMP officers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An undisclosed number of people were shot.
9:57 p.m. - The RCMP reveals the details of the shooting on Twitter.
#Codiac #RCMPNB - 3 officers mortally wounded by shooter. 2 officers sustained non life threatning injuries. Shooter still actively sought.
10:04 p.m. – Mayor George Leblanc sends prayers to families affected by the shooting over Twitter. @GeorgeLeBlanc: "Terrible sad news for Moncton. Stay indoors and allow police to do their job. Prayers for the families."
10:07 p.m.: The federal Public Safety Minister makes a statement via Twitter:
@MinStevenBlaney: "Shocked by the tragedy in #Moncton. Thoughts and prayers with our frontline @rcmpgrcpolice officers and families."
After 11 p.m. - RCMP Constable Damien Theriault makes the first public statements about the shooting, confirming that three Codiac RCMP officers were shot and killed. Two other officers were injured. “We are still actively looking for the shooter. He is believed to still be in the Pinehurst subdivision area of Moncton. We are urging the people who live in that area to stay inside and lock their doors.”
RCMP also requests that residents not reveal the whereabouts of RCMP and police officers.
Thursday, June 5
3:57 a.m. – Const. Theriault confirms in a phone interview that the suspect is still in the Pinehurst subdivision. The police continue to request people use restraint on social media.
3:58 a.m. – Prime Minister Stephen Harper releases a statement offering condolences to the families and colleagues of those affected by the shooting.
10:45 a.m. – A press conference is held at the Crown Plaza in Moncton. The search for Bourque is ongoing, and resources have been brought in from across the province. The RCMP confirmed that the suspect was using a long rifle, and that he had more than one gun.
4:30 p.m. – The RCMP confirm that one of the Mounties injured in the attack has been released from hospital.
Friday, June 6
12:10 a.m. – Bourque is arrested without incident in a residential area near Wheeler Boulevard and Mountain Road in Moncton, ending the 30 hour manhunt. Police say Bourque was unarmed at the time of the arrest, but weapons were recovered close by.
8:20 a.m. – The three Mounties killed in the shooting are identified as: Const. David Ross, 32, Const. Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, 45 and Const. Douglas Larche, 40. The two injured RCMP officers are identified as Const. Darlene Goguen and Const. Eric Dubois. Officials say both Goguen and Dubois are recovering from their injuries.
