TORONTO -- Simon Pagenaud captured the pole position for Sunday's Honda Indy Toronto after finishing first in qualifying.

The Frenchman had the fastest lap during the final round of qualifying Saturday in a track-record time of 58.9124 seconds. It's his first pole this season and in this race.

Pagenaud edged Graham Rahal for top spot on the streets surrounding Exhibition Place.

Team Penske teammates Will Power, the defending race champion, and Helio Castroneves along with Scott Dixon round out the top-five drivers for Sunday's event.

Canadian James Hinchcliffe will start sixth.

Pagenaud, who captured his 11th career pole, set a track record in the second round of qualifying before breaking it again in the final round. Power had set the mark last year with a time of 59.7747 seconds.

Hinchcliffe trailed for the majority of the first qualifying round but rallied to advance into the second. After a strong start to the round, the Oakville, Ont., native fell back but came back for a strong final lap.

Rookie Esteban Gutierrez crashed near the end of the first round, hitting the wall on the straightaway to the finish line. His car caught fire but the former Formula One driver escaped unscathed but it caused a delayed of about 20 minutes as track officials cleaned the debris.

Takuma Sato, who won the Indianapolis 500, edged his back left tire in the first round and needed to change it.

JR Hildebrand crashed while attempting to get past a chicane at Turn 8 during the second round of qualifying.
