EDMONTON - A police affidavit says an Alberta man accused of killing two prostitutes told his family that a hockey bag found to contain a woman's body was filled with compost worms.

The affidavit was used by police to obtain authorization from a judge for a wiretap in their investigation of Thomas Svekla, 39, who is charged with second-degree murder in the deaths of Rachel Quinney and Theresa Innes.

The document -- released by a judge on Monday for publication -- says Svekla made the remark in May 2006, shortly before the accused man's sister discovered Innes's nude body in the bag at a home in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.

Police allege the 36-year-old woman was slain earlier in High Level, Alta., and that her body was transported about 700 kilometres south.

Rachel Quinney's body was found in a patch of trees near Sherwood Park, Alta., in June 2004.

Procedural arguments in Svekla's case are expected to continue until February when testimony is scheduled to start before a judge alone.
