A one-year-old Toronto girl who police say was abducted by her father early Wednesday morning has been returned safely.

The infant was allegedly handed over to a passerby shortly after noon with a note from her father and the phone number of the child's mother, CTV's Chris Eby reported.

The woman reportedly contacted the baby's mother and the child was returned shortly after.

The infant was not harmed during the frightening episode, which began at about 6:30 a.m. when her father broke into her mother's apartment in the Dovercourt and Queen Streets area and took the child, police said.

Police appealed to the public for any information on the whereabouts of the missing girl and her 22-year-old father.

The child's parents don't live together and their relationship was described by police as "highly volatile."
