As we enter the second half of the gardening season most of the country is feeling the effects of a long, hot summer. Many plants and most lawns that have not received regular watering are stressed and not looking their best.

The effects of drought can be minimized with the use of rain barrels (the water is free and there are never any municipal restrictions on it!), the use of bark mulch around permanent plantings and hand watering where it is appropriate.

It is worth noting that a lawn is more drought tolerant when it is cut at 2 1/2 inches high, as the taller the grass blades the deeper and more dought tolerant the roots. Also an application of fertilizer three times a year helps to keep your lawn healthy.

As a result it will bounce back from summer dormancy in late August when evening temperatures drop and days shorten.
