TORONTO - An Ottawa man accused of shooting and killing his father with a crossbow made a brief appearance in a Toronto court today.

Zhou Fang is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 52-year-old Si Cheng, who was fatally shot in the crowded Main Street branch of the Toronto library last Thursday.

Fang was arrested blocks away.

The 24-year-old, who appeared in court via video, was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on Dec. 22.

Cheng had two domestic violence convictions involving his family.

A divorce lawyer for Nora Fang, Cheng's wife, said his client and her son feared Cheng and had once obtained a restraining order against him.

The lawyer said the pair went into hiding from Cheng and moved out of Toronto after the couple separated in 2002.
