The Grand Theatre’s annual High School Project is back with a bold and high-energy production of Newsies, a musical that tells the true story of young newspaper sellers who stood up against unfair working conditions in 1899 New York City. “It’s a story about young people discovering their power,” said Ray Hogg, director of Newsies. “While it’s on the surface a story about a bunch of boys and girls protesting injustice in the workplace, it’s actually about the power young people have to change the world.” The plot follows Jack Kelly, a teenage strike leader who rallies his fellow “newsies” after their bosses raise newspaper prices without warning. Their protest ultimately inspires a citywide general strike, showcasing the impact of youth-driven collective action. Breanne Ritchie, the Grand Theatre’s director of education and community engagement, said the High School Project offers students opportunities both on and off stage. “This year, we processed over 400 applications for all of the roles and ended up with 61 young people taking part,” she said. “Everything from props and wardrobe to stage management, photography, marketing, scenic art, and even playing in the orchestra alongside professional musicians.” In total, 38 young performers appear on stage in the cast of Newsies. Trent Robichaud, who plays Jack Kelly, said the experience has been unforgettable. “It has been so amazing,” Robichaud said. “I still remember the first day, it was so much fun just meeting everyone. If you’re someone who wants to join theatre and you’re in high school, do the High School Project, or at least audition. It’s such a welcoming and warm community.” He added with a smile: “And buy tickets to Newsies.” The show opens this Friday, Sept. 19, and runs for two weeks on the Spriet Stage.
