A jury has been selected for a second-degree murder trial at the London courthouse. After jury selection concluded Monday morning, the Crown delivered its opening address late in the afternoon. Crown attorney Bianca DiBiase told jurors the case stems from a daylight shooting on Sept. 12, 2018. According to the Crown, 22-year-old Christopher Clements-Card went to visit his girlfriend in the Bonaventure subdivision and encountered the accused, Zachary McDermott. “There was a confrontation and Mr. Clements-Card punched Mr. McDermott,” DiBiase told the jury. The Crown alleges Clements-Card then left and went to a nearby coffee shop. Jurors were told surveillance video will show McDermott driving into the parking lot moments later. “Mr. McDermott pulls into the parking lot ... seconds later Mr. McDermott shot Mr. Clements-Card twice,” DiBiase said. The Crown alleges both bullets entered the victim’s body through his back before McDermott returned to his vehicle and drove away. Clements-Card was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. McDermott, now 26, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. The court has heard more than 100 people are connected to the case. The trial is expected to last about four weeks.
