Quarterback Ben Casselman made the most of his first career OUA football start by throwing 3 touchdowns and 177 yards in a 49-7 Western Mustangs romp over Carleton. The Mustangs travelled to Ottawa and ran all over the Ravens to the tune of 384 yards and with a Queen’s Gaels loss to Windsor, they joined McMaster and Queen’s in a three-way tie for top spot in the league at 5-1. Casselman got the start after Jerome Rancourt threw six interceptions in his previous two games and Faulds told media after the game that he’s going to stick with him next week against the Ottawa Gee Gees. “Ben’s first start as a U SPORTS quarterback, it was good to see he was very efficient, didn’t show any signs of nerves, spread the ball around, we really leaned on our run game, especially when the score kind of dictated that, a lot of different guys getting carries, close to 400 yards of rushing,” said Faulds. On the ground, running back Ethan Dolby had 140 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Western returned home, only to have to head right back to Ottawa next weekend. CLARKE SINGER WINS 500TH OUA HOCKEY GAME AT WESTERN Western Mustangs head coach Clarke Singer has been behind the bench at Thompson Arena dating back to 1999. That longevity and success was celebrated Saturday when he won his 500th career game in a 7-2 victory over Waterloo. After losing to Toronto in the season opener, the team bounced back to split the weekend and make sure they weren’t digging themselves a big hole in the standings early. “Most importantly I was happy we got a win tonight and got a split of the opening weekend, I think our guys played hard in all areas and I was proud of them for that,” Singer told WesternMustangs.ca After the win, he was doused with water and was drenched by the players emptying the water cooler on the legend. “They say there are 10 things in life you always remember: the day you got married, the day your children were born are some of those for sure, but I think, based on the post-game reaction tonight, this will definitely be one of those occasions for sure.” LONDON ALLIANCE FC UNDEFEATED AT U15 NATIONAL SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS The only thing standing between the London Alliance FC (LAFC) U15 team and a shot at National gold is the Edmonton Warriors. LONDON BEEFEATERS BEAT SAINTS IN OVERTIME TO ADVANCE TO OFC FINAL The London Beefeaters have advanced to the OFC Football final after a dramatic win on the road over the Saint Clair Saints. Trailing by seven on the final play of regulation, Jason Leonard caught a touchdown pass on third and goal to send the game to overtime tied at 19. In the overtime, both teams get a chance to possess the ball from the 35-yard line. London had the ball first and Xavier Zatylny rolled out of the pocket and found Brandon Visouvath for the score to put the Beefeaters up 26-19. When the Saints got the ball for their chance, defensive lineman Noah Williams came up with a huge sack to force one last long pass attempt for the tie. The throw bounced off the hands of receiver Nate Carter and London came away with the victory. The Beefeaters will now travel to Sault Ste. Marie to face the undefeated Sault College Cougars.
