Vito’s Cave on Hamilton Road East was known to be a London hotspot in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. Vito Moretti who immigrated to Canada from Bari, Italy started operating Vito’s Pizza in 1956. When it first opened there was a large front window where people would gather to be entertained as they watched pizza dough getting thrown in the air. A few years later Moretti transformed the shop into Vito’s Cave, serving up Italian cuisine. The restaurant closed in 1985 after about thirty years of business. Earlier this week, Moretti passed away following a brief illness. His daughter Teresa Moran says he was in good spirits until the end, “He still had a wonderful sense of humour,” she added. “We had one last family gathering and he was the one who planned the whole meal.” Vito Moretti was 94 years old. Funeral arrangements are set for next Saturday, Sept. 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Lyle Street.
