Firefighters from several Perth County-area departments battled a large barn fire near Listowel on Wednesday night that affected dozens of cattle. North Perth Fire Department crews from the Listowel, Atwood and Monkton stations were dispatched to a working structure fire at a dairy barn on Line 88 at about 9:05 p.m. Mutual aid assistance was provided by fire departments from Minto, Mapleton and Howick as crews worked to contain the blaze. Heavy equipment was brought to the scene at approximately 11:15 p.m. to assist firefighters. Officials said 88 cattle were involved in the fire, although it remains unclear how many animals were possibly lost. No injuries to firefighters or anyone else at the scene were reported. While a cause has not been released, officials said the fire is not suspicious in nature.
