Tony McQuail has thrown his hat in the ring. The Huron County organic farmer has officially filed his application papers to succeed Jagmeet Singh as leader of the federal NDP. However, McQuail isn’t a candidate yet. He says he needs to be officially vetted by the party, raise $125,000 from supporters, and submit 500 signatures on his nomination papers. He is running on the idea of merging the NDP and Green Party, for one “progressive” choice for voters. “At its best, democracy helps us find our collective wisdom, but for it to work, everyone has to be at the table,” said McQuail. “We need to regenerate the earth’s ability to heal and thrive. We need a redistributive system that is equitable. Our current economic and tax system has been very good at concentrating the wealth of society in a few hands. Finally, we need to redesign how we do things so that we use less energy and materials while creating more satisfaction and joy.” Over the past 45 years McQuail has ran seven times for the N.D.P in his home riding of Huron-Bruce.
