As the school year kicked off Tuesday, London Ont., health professionals and police are reminding families to take extra precautions to keep children safe and healthy. Dr. Rodrick Lim, a pediatrician at London’s Children’s Hospital, said this time of year often brings a rise in illness. “We’re no stranger to infections as parents, but as kids congregate together and the weather cools down, we know infections are going to rise,” Lim explained. Doctors are encouraging parents to review proper hand hygiene with their children. “If your child isn’t feeling well or has a fever, it’s really important to stay home and prevent that spread to others,” Lim added. Lim also urged families to pay attention to students’ mental well-being during the transition back to class. “Really make sure they have a clear line of communication and the opportunity to seek health professionals for any help needed,” he said. London police are also raising concerns about safety on the roads as students return to school. “Anyone driving a motor vehicle should have their eyes on the road and be extra cautious around school zones as well as any pedestrian crosswalks,” said Matt Dawson with London Police Services. Police are asking parents to ensure children walking or taking the bus are well informed. “Making sure they have appropriate numbers if they get lost or misdirected and they need help from either an adult or even police,” Dawson said. The overall message from both health and safety officials as the school year begins: stay cautious, stay prepared, and stay healthy.
