Members of London’s cycling community took to the streets Saturday afternoon, calling for safer roads after a series of crashes involving cyclists in the region left riders with serious, life-threatening injuries last month. The community ride began at Gibbons Park before stopping at Victoria Park, bringing attention to the need for improved cycling safety and greater accountability from governments at all levels. Luis Patricio, a London cycling volunteer, said recent incidents, highlight the urgent need for change. “It’s really a matter of will and not a matter of knowledge or skills or resources,” Patricio said. “It’s really just the willpower.” Organizers hope the ride will keep the conversation going beyond Saturday’s event, encouraging residents to stay engaged and push for safer roads for everyone. Patricio said governments must be held accountable for making streets safer, emphasizing the importance of protecting all road users. Andrea Nair also took part in the ride, sharing her experience after her son was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. Nair said the driver failed to properly check for cyclists before moving forward. Her son was not injured, but the incident reinforced the importance of drivers being aware of their surroundings. “I’m here to just remind drivers that they need to look for us, look for us, and see where we are before they proceed,” Nair said. The ride comes as cycling safety remains a concern in London and the surrounding area, following several reported crashes last month involving cyclists who sustained serious, life-threatening injuries. Organizers say improving safety requires a coordinated effort, with municipal, provincial, and federal governments working together on measures to better protect cyclists. They hope Saturday’s ride will help build momentum for change and remind drivers that cyclists are among the many people sharing the road.
