At least two of four Libyan diplomats are attempting to stay in Canada after Ottawa ordered the officials out of the country within five days.

The two diplomats are trying to claim refugee status or political asylum to avoid returning to Libya where nearly six months of unrest continues.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced the decision to deport the diplomats in a statement late Monday.

"These people now have five business days to vacate the embassy and leave the country," Baird said.

He said it was the last step in Canada's efforts to isolate and delegitimize the regime of Moammar Gadhafi.

Canada is part of the NATO mission enforcing a UN-sanctioned no-fly zone over Libya to protect the country's citizens from attacks by Gadhafi's forces.

The Libyan revolt to oust Gadhafi started in mid-February with rebels quickly wresting control of much of the eastern half of the country.
