OTTAWA - Liberal Leader Bob Rae wants to take a page out of the Conservative fundraising book.

Rae says his party is going to begin approaching donors with targeted appeals for contributions.

An example would be hitting up Canadians for cash in order to oppose the Tory government's crime or health-care policies.

The Conservatives have been successfully using specific issues to squeeze money out of party members for years.

Last year's financial returns posted on Elections Canada's website shows the Tories collected more than $17 million in contributions and donations.

The Liberals brought in more than $7.3 million. The NDP's numbers were not yet available.
