CALGARY - The lawyer for Dustin Paxton has suggested a prosecution expert on human captivity has drawn an incorrect conclusion in the case.

The expert, Dr. Kris Mohandie, testified that a roommate Paxton is accused of torturing and beating was a prisoner.

But Jim Lutz told Paxton's trial in Calgary that the roommate was free to come and go as he pleased.

He also suggested the man might have just been apathetic or comfortable in his surroundings.

But Mohandie said there were clear patterns of control in place and the man simply did what he was told.

He also testified that abuse victims will often form a bond with their attackers, though it's a bond based on fear and terror.

Paxton, who is originally from Winnipeg, is charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault and forcible confinement.

The roommate was dropped off at a Regina hospital in April 2010 beaten and starving.
