NEW DELHI - Indian police say a land mine explosion in the country's restive east has killed nine people, including two police officers.

Police official Amarnath Upadhyaya says the attack by suspected communist rebels occurred Wednesday in Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh state.

The guerrillas say they are inspired by Chinese communist revolutionary leader Mao Zedong.

They have been fighting for more than three decades in several Indian states, demanding land and jobs for agricultural labourers and the poor.

Over the past few years about 2,000 people -- including police, militants and civilians -- have been killed in the violence.
