A Guelph woman says she lost approximately $140,000 to a cryptocurrency scam. She told Guelph Police she received a text from a stranger several months ago. The woman replied, believing the sender had the wrong number. Guelph Police said the two exchanged text messages back and forth. The sender convinced the woman to create accounts with several cryptocurrency agencies. “During the scam, the victim reported using various methods to send her ‘investments,’ including wire transfers and deposits in cryptocurrency ATMs,” police wrote in a media release. “She believed her balance had grown significantly, however when she attempted to withdraw funds was told she needed to pay substantial fees.” They also warned residents to be cautious when responding to messages or emails from unknown senders, especially ones urging immediate action. “It is always best to independently contact the supposed sender and confirm the legitimacy of the correspondence before taking action,” police said.
