Investigators are looking into a series of distraction thefts involving imitation jewelry in Cambridge after jewelry was stolen from multiple victims. The Waterloo Regional Service Police received a report of the first incident on Saturday around 11:15 a.m. near Kerwood Drive and Merlene Court, where a victim’s golden necklace and two religious pendants were stolen while they were on a walk. A second theft was reported later that day around 2 p.m. near Porter Crescent and Henwood Drive. The suspects fled the area before police arrived. Police believe the incidents could be related. Investigators said during both thefts, the suspects approached the victims, engaged them in conversation before stealing valuable jewelry, leaving victims with imitation jewelry and religious items. The suspect vehicle was described as a black SUV in one incident and a black Dodge Grand Caravan in another. “Police are reminding residents to be cautious when approached by strangers offering gifts, jewelry, or physical contact. These distraction thefts often involve suspects placing inexpensive items on victims while removing valuable jewelry without the victim immediately noticing,” police said in a media release. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-570-9777, extension 2299.
