University of Guelph Gryphons secure OUA title, prepare for nationals

The University of Guelph Gryphons’ women’s hockey team are champions again.

The team downed the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 2 to 1 on Saturday to claim their eighth Ontario University Athletics title, the McCaw Cup.

As a sold-out crowd of 1,250 fans cheered them on, Gryphons Captain Katherine Heard tucked away the game winning goal midway through the third period.

But there’s no time to rest on their laurels – Guelph is now gearing up for the national 2026 U Sports Women’s Hockey Championships taking place in Elmira from March 19 until March 22.

On Sunday, U Sports announced the seedings and tournament schedule. Guelph is the third seed.

Their first challenge hits close to home: they’ll face the sixth-seeded University of Waterloo in the quarterfinal on March 19.

The University of Waterloo Warriors are hosting the tournament after they won silver last year.
