A union representing education workers is condemning what it says is a decision by the Waterloo Catholic District School Board to eliminate 15 morning supervisor positions. CUPE 2512, which represents 1,200 support staff at the board, said it was recently notified that morning supervisor roles would be cut at the end of the school year. Mechelle O’Hagan, president of CUPE 2512, said the positions have been in place for more than a decade, supporting families across 11 elementary schools. “Morning supervisors play a critical role in supporting students before the school day begins, ensuring they are safely supervised on the yard,” O’Hagan said in a news release sent on Tuesday. “The decision to eliminate these positions is not justified and lacks clear rationale, especially when student enrollment is growing and the board is receiving increased funding.” According to the union, the cuts come despite the school board expecting elementary enrolment to grow by more than 600 students next year, backed by a four per cent increase in provincial funding for the 2026-27 school year. The school board did not immediately respond to requests to confirm the union’s claims.
