Guelph Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) are warning residents to remain vigilant as fraud activity increases during the holiday season. According to the CAFC, common scams this time of year include fraudulent online shopping deals, fake shipping notifications, cellphone promotions, romance scams, investment frauds and requests for payment using gift cards. Officials say scammers often use urgency, too-good-to-be-true offers or impersonate legitimate companies and charities to trick victims into sharing personal or financial information. Residents are reminded that legitimate businesses and organizations will not request payment via gift cards or demand immediate action through unsolicited texts or emails. Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by fraud is encouraged to contact their local police service and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
