The first round in the Battle of Highway 7 series between the Kitchener Rangers and Guelph Storm has gone to the East Avenue Blue, winning 6-3 at the Aud Friday night. Guelph broke the deadlock only 25 seconds into the game through Tyler Hopkins. The Rangers equalized courtesy of Cameron Arquette, with a Luca Romano goal two seconds before the buzzer making the score 2-1 heading into the first break. Two quick goals, first from Guelph’s Joshua Avery, then from Kitchener’s Luca Santala, put the game at 3-2 in the second. Rangers’ goaltender Jason Schaubel was on full display throughout the middle frame, helping the Blueshirts see out three powerplays, including a 5 on 3 shift. Haeden Ellis fired home on the powerplay before Romano captured his second of the game to carry a 5-2 lead into the final period. Ryan Roobroeck found a consolation goal for the Storm before Arquette buried an empty-netter to deliver a final score of 6-3 for the Kitchener faithful. The win came at the cost of a nine-game winning streak that the Storm rode into the Aud. The Blueshirts are back in action on Sunday, October 25th, as they travel to the Sleeman Centre to face the Guelph Storm, with puck drop set for 2:07 p.m.
