Ontario Provincial Police say a resident in Fergus has lost approximately $50,000 to scammers. The victim said they were contacted by someone claiming to represent a cryptocurrency exchange program. “The representatives advised there was a security concern related to the victim’s cryptocurrency wallet and accounts,” OPP wrote in a media release. “Believing the communications to be legitimate and noting that they included professional branding, the victim acted on the instructions provided by completing a number of actions involving their accounts and cryptocurrency holdings.” OPP said the victim believed the security issues had been resolved until they discovered unauthorized cryptocurrency transactions on their accounts and a “significant” amount had been transferred to an unknown wallet. The theft was reported to both the Ontario Provincial Police and Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
