CTV News Kitchener has won two Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards for its coverage over the past year, including the award for best television newscast. The winning newscast featured coverage of a Toronto paramedic charged with voyeurism at a Kitchener strip club after a former dancer discovered images and videos on his phone left behind at the club in. The broadcast also included coverage of several arrests following fireworks being shot at people in Kitchener’s Victoria Park on Victoria Day. The May 21, 2024 broadcast earned the top honour for Best TV Newscast (small/medium market) in the RTDNA Central Region. CTV News Kitchener also received a Feature News award for a story about a Guelph wrestling fan who was surprised by WWE superstar Cody Rhodes after discovering he did not have an accessible seat. “We’re honoured to receive this recognition from the RTDNA,” said CTV Kitchener News Director Daniel Cress. “These awards highlight the collaboration, commitment to quality and creative storytelling our newsroom produces, all with the goal of reflecting and informing our community. I am very proud of this group and happy their work is receiving this well-deserved acknowledgment.” CTV News Kitchener was nominated in two other categories including Investigative Excellence for coverage of allegations of unpaid wages and contracts at Dutchie’s Fresh Food Market in Kitchener. There was also a nomination in the category of Continuing Coverage (small/medium market) for ongoing work following the story of the University of Waterloo stabber, Geovanny Villalba-Aleman. Central Region winners will now compete against winners from the Prairies, West and East regions at the 2025 RTDNA National Awards in November.
