The County of Brant has announced a partnership they say will help create the county’s first co-operative housing complex. The municipality is teaming up with Central Ontario Co-operative Housing Federation (COCHF) to build a 35-unit affordable senior’s housing project at 50 High Street in St. George. It will be built behind the Russell Height’s seniors housing complex. Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2027, and the first residents could move in by fall of 2028. When it is finished, the property will include an elevator to help residents reach their homes and special attention will be given to the building’s landscaping and façade to ensure they blend in with the existing Russell Heights residence. The county said it will provide the land and a $950,000 contribution toward construction costs. COCHF will act the developer and operator. More details about the project will be shared at an open house on Oct. 19, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the Gaukel Memorial Community Centre in St. George.
