A few things to keep in mind when storing items for the winter:

Paint and liquid building supplies should be kept in a temperature-controlled environment. Outdoor sheds are often too cold. The same goes for terracotta or clay planter pots.

Set up seasonal sheds and tents to the side of the house so you are not looking at them all winter. Keep in mind the view your neighbors will have as well!

If setting up tents to keep firewood or patio furniture protected, outline the edges with mini lights to create a sparkling silhouette at night; the lights will not only look nice during the winter, but also add an element of security to the backyard.

Drain all water out of garden hoses at the end of the warm weather season. If they freeze with water in them they will crack and be useless next spring.

Theme your storage; a separate shed for sports equipment, gardening or tools, a plastic bin for each family member's camping supplies or toys for the pool.

There are companies that will come pickup your outdoor furniture and store it in a dry, warm environment for the winter then bring it back in the spring. It's a pricy option (about $200-500), but worth it if you have high-end furnishings for the terrace or patio and travel a lot during winter months.

Oh! And don't forget to cover your air conditioning units; whether in the garden on the roof or installed in the window- a good tight covering will keeps birds off and leaves/dirt out until next summer.
