Residents from Ontario's Huron County gathered on Friday to jeer Jesse Imeson as he entered a courthouse, where he was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of an elderly couple.
As Ontario Provincial Police officers escorted the shackled 22-year-old Windsor man into the Goderich provincial courthouse, angry locals who once hid in their homes for nearly two weeks, fearful of becoming Imeson's next murder victim, came out to publicly show their disgust.
The anger outside the courtroom was palpable, with people shouting "murderer" and calling for the death penalty as Imeson walked by.
"I don't think he has a conscience," local resident Marjorie Middlecamp told CTV Southwestern Ontario. "He can't have or else he wouldn't have done this sort of thing."
Inside the courtroom, Imeson simply nodded when he was charged on two counts of first degree murder of Helene and William Regier, who were found shot to death in their farm house near Dashwood on July 23. He was caught in Quebec near the Ontario border after he broke into a cottage in a wooded area. Justice Pauline Aguirre formally read the charges, as Imeson stood still, showing no emotion.
Imeson, the subject of a week-long national police hunt, will remain behind bars in London, Ont. He will make another court appearance in Goderich by video on Sept. 10.
Imeson is also charged in the slaying of Windsor bartender Carlos Rivera, whose body was found in Imeson's apartment on July 19.
