VANCOUVER - The International Olympic Committee says it won't open an inquiry into comments made by a high-ranking official that have angered several First Nations.

Richard Pound, a member of the IOC and of the 2010 Olympics board of directors, has apologized for using a phrase in French that could be interpreted as calling aboriginal people savages.

A spokeswoman from the IOC says they're confident Pound intended no offence and as such their ethics commission won't open an inquiry.

A group that promotes aboriginal culture in Quebec had written the IOC earlier this month to ask they take action around Pound's comments.

Andre Dudemaine with the group Land Insights says he's disappointed the Olympic overseers won't follow up and says that means they effectively endorse Pound's remarks.

Dudemaine says it shows that slurs against First Nations have become so commonplace they're just shrugged off.
