Automaker Honda is recalling more than 830,000 vehicles worldwide, in an expansion of a previously announced recall spurred by possible airbag deployment problems.

Honda Motor Co. says some of its Honda and Acura-branded vehicles from the 2001 to the 2003 model years may have faulty driver's side, steering-wheel mounted airbag modules.

The cars weren't included in the original recalls dating back to 2008, because they already had their driver's airbag modules replaced following a collision or in the course of other repairs.

But in a statement released Monday night, the automaker said the replacement airbags may have been faulty too.

"Owners of all potentially affected vehicles are being notified because Honda has not been able to determine which specific vehicles received one of those parts," the company said, explaining that the faulty airbags could do more harm than good.

"The replacement driver's airbag inflators in affected vehicles may deploy with too much pressure, which can cause the inflator casing to rupture and could result in injury or fatality," Honda warned.

The company said as many as 2,430 faulty airbags were installed in post-crash repairs worldwide, but doesn't know exactly which vehicles got them.

In Canada, Honda Canada Inc. said as many as 152 vehicles may have had the faulty airbags installed.

As a result, owners of all the possibly affected vehicles will be asked to take their cars to the dealer for inspection.

Of the 830,000 affected vehicles worldwide, approximately 29,300 are in Canada.

The vehicles being added to the recall include:

Certain 2001 and 2002 Honda Accord and Civic models

2002 Odyssey

2002 and 2003 CR-V

2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL

2003 Acura 3.2 CL

Honda originally informed the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the airbag problem in November 2008. At that time, the recall covered less than 4,000 Accords and Civics from the 2001 model year.

In July 2009, the company expanded the recall to cover another 440,000 vehicles, including some 2001-2002 models of the Accord, 2001 Civics and 2002-2003 Acura TLs.

Then in February 2010, the recall was expanded again to include another 378,000 cars. With the total number of vehicles recalled to that point totalling 822,000, Honda said at the time it was aware of 12 incidents linked to the problem, with 11 injuries and one death.

Owners of vehicles included in this latest expansion will be notified by mail in late May.
