QUEBEC - Quebec police have seized more than $38,000 worth of heroin after drug-sniffing dogs at a maximum security prison alerted authorities to a suspicious baby carriage.

Officials at the Donnacona federal penitentiary near Quebec City say they stopped a woman on the weekend as she attempted to visit an inmate with her four-year-old child and one-month-old baby.

They asked her to leave when a dog reacted to something in the baby carriage.

The woman then became agitated and allegedly punched a security guard, prompting the prison to call Quebec police.

Police later told the prison the mother eventually handed over 32 grams of heroin.

Prison officials say they seized an additional $14,000 worth of heroin from another female visitor in a separate incident over the weekend.
