KINGSTON, Ont. - A preliminary hearing starts today in the case of three Montreal sisters and a female relative found dead in a submerged car.

The car was discovered on June 30, 2009 at the bottom of a canal lock near Kingston, Ont., by a canal employee.

Dead were 19-year-old Zainab Shafia, her sisters Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, as well as 50-year-old Rona Amir Mohammed.

The girls' father had told police and the media the crash occurred after the eldest daughter had secretly taken the car for a joyride.

But in late July, Kingston police charged the girls' parents and their brother with four counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The family, originally from Kabul, Afghanistan, spent 15 years in Dubai before moving to Montreal about three years ago.
