VANCOUVER - The H&M clothing store has apologized over a breastfeeding brouhaha in Vancouver, saying it regrets any embarrassment or concern for the mother who was asked by staff to nurse her baby in a change room.
In a news release, H&M says it fully supports federal and provincial laws around a woman's right to breastfeed and to ensure this can be done with dignity and respect in public.
The clothing store says it has a policy in place around nursing mothers, but there was a misunderstanding at the Vancouver store level about that policy.
H&M says it will now redouble its efforts to ensure all employees are aware of the policy and that they are trained to anticipate the needs of breastfeeding mothers.
About 100 moms packed the Vancouver store yesterday for a so-called "nurse-in," nursing their babies to protest the treatment of Manuela Valle.
Valle had said she was considering taking her complaint to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.
