PARIS - The French Senate has begun debating a bill that would make it a crime to deny the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide -- prompting Turkish threats of reprisal.

At least 150 demonstrators -- pro-Turkish and pro-Armenian, kept apart by a large police presence -- waved flags and blew whistles outside the upper house of parliament.

Earlier Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkey would continue sanctions against France as long as the bill is in motion.

Turkey suspended military, economic and political ties with France after the lower house passed the bill last month.
