The son of former Newfoundland premier Brian Tobin has been granted day parole after being sentenced to three years in jail in August for the drunk driving death of his friend.

Jack Tobin, 25, pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death after 24-year-old Alex Zolpis died in a stunt on Christmas Eve 2010.

Zolpis was pinned under a pick-up truck driven by Tobin who spun the vehicle on a rooftop parking lot with other friends.

Tobin's day parole hearing was held in Kingston, Ont.

The parole board said he will be able to serve his day parole when a space becomes available at a halfway house, a process that could take between two and four weeks.
