GROSMORNE NATIONAL PARK - Two fishermen have been rescued by a Cormorant helicopter after their vessel ran aground off the west coast of Newfoundland.

Search and rescue spokeswoman Jeri Grychowski (Grah-chow-ski) says that the Atlantic Endeavor ran ashore near Cow Head about 30 kilometres north of Grosmorne National Park.

She says the two men on board climbed into a hard-shell survival raft and tethered themselves to the vessel, which was drifting and taking on water.

A Cormorant helicopter and a Hercules aircraft flew to the scene from Gander, N.L., and two Coast Guard vessels were also en route when the rescue occurred.

Grychowski says the men were hoisted safely onto the helicopters just after midnight local time on Thursday.

She says seas were reported to have swells of up to three metres in the area.
