Fashion Television, the show that brought international style trends to millions of Canadian living rooms, has suspended production.

Bell Media announced Wednesday that the program's host, Jeanne Beker, who herself became a Canadian fashion icon, will remain with the company.

"Bell Media remains committed to the fashion genre and will continue to grow FashionTelevisionChannel to deliver a broader appeal for viewers, advertisers, and distributors," Scott Henderson, vice president of communications at Bell Media, said in a statement.

Henderson said repeat episodes of the program will continue to air on CTV and on FashionTelevisionChannel. It is unclear if there are any new episodes that have been completed and have yet to air.

Beker took to Twitter to announce the news, calling it "surreal."

"This dream is over: After 27 glorious years, FT production ceased today. So sad to see some of my closest colleagues move on."

In a second tweet, Beker said she is looking forward to working with Bell Media and "evolving the FT brand."

Beker was born in Toronto, and studied theatre and mime before landing an arts and entertainment reporting job with CBC radio in the mid-1970s.

After joining 1050 CHUM radio, Beker got her break in television when CHUM bought Citytv and launched the music news magazine show, The New Music.

She also served as CityPulse's entertainment reporter and anchor and contributed to MuchMusic, but jumped at the chance to change gears when Fashion Television launched in 1985.

The program was a global success story, growing to reach an audience in 130 countries around the world. The digital FashionTelevisionChannel followed in 2001.

Beker also served as editor-in-chief of FQ Magazine and SIR Magazine from 2003 to 2009, has written several books, started a clothing line and serves as a judge on Canada's Next Top Model.
