NORTH BAY, Ont - A months-long battle to keep a specialized dementia program in North Bay, Ont. will come to an end this week.

Nine seniors are set to be moved to Sudbury after their mental health centre merges with a new hospital and loses beds on Friday.

Cathy Crosskie, a support worker who works with several of the patients' families, says most are shocked the North East Local Health Integration Network is going through with the move despite their concerns.

Opponents of the move argue it will isolate and disturb the patients, whose health is already fragile.

The 130-kilometre distance between North Bay and Sudbury makes it hard for family members -- many who are seniors themselves -- to make the trip.

The health centre has said it tried to disrupt as few local families with the move as possible, and many of the transferring patients are from the Sudbury-Manitoulin area.
