Stephen Harper's new cat now has a name: Stanley.

The announcement, coming as the Vancouver Canucks play for the Stanley Cup, was made Tuesday on the prime minister's Facebook page.

A poll on the social-media website had asked people to vote on a name for the grey tabby.

The other choices were Smokie and Vingt-quatre -- French for 24, the street number of the prime minister's official residence on Sussex Drive.

Stanley won easily with nearly 5,000 votes. Runner-up Smokie got about 1,800 votes.

A new Facebook photo shows a smiling Harper and his wife, Laureen, posing with the cat at the prime minister's desk.

The Harper family adopted Stanley from the Ottawa Humane Society and the cat joins others in the prime ministerial residence.

The Prime Minister's Office urged others to adopt pets.

"The prime minister and Mrs. Harper are delighted to welcome Stanley to their house and encourage all Canadians to adopt pets from the Humane Society," spokesman Andrew MacDougall said.
