MONTREAL - Swedish telecom giant Ericsson is licensing Nortel patents for advanced wireless technology that will be used in cellphone networks.

Ericsson Canada CEO Mark Henderson says even though Ericsson has acquired Nortel's wireless unit, Nortel still owns the patents.

Henderson says Ericsson has a non-exclusive licensing agreement with Nortel for the duration of the patents.

He says that means Canadian-based Nortel could sell or license them to other companies, such as BlackBerry maker Research In Motion.

The patents weren't part of the Nortel acquisition and Henderson says Ericsson isn't sublicensing them to anyone else.

Ericsson bid US$1.13 billion for Nortel's wireless division with its LTE, or Long Term Evolution -- technology that is expected to deliver the equivalent of a high-speed home Internet experience on a mobile phone.
