Adam Levine's experiments with drugs were a "valuable experience."

The Maroon 5 singer says his experiences taking magic mushrooms -- a psychedelic, mind-altering drug -- and smoking marijuana helped him to "understand" himself better.

He said: "I definitely, firmly believe that the experience I had on mushrooms made me understand certain things about myself that I probably wouldn't have otherwise.

"What I took away from that experience was valuable and beneficial to me. It really forced me to look at myself.

"It's so corny to say but it's true; you just get in touch with the wonderment you have as a kid that you tend to lose. Obviously if you abuse a drug like that you'll never come back and end up as a f***ing psychotic maniac.

"It's hard for me, as someone who does speak publicly about things, I'm not saying, you should do drugs. I hope that's clear."

Adam, 33, also said he believes smoking marijuana -- also known as cannabis or pot -- has helped his creative process and even aided him to write hit songs.

He told Q magazine: "I smoked a lot of pot when I was younger. There is a place in this world for a little weed every once in a while.

"I've written songs after smoking a joint and it was good. More often than not its absolute garbage."
