Five Alberta sporting events expected to attract thousands of athletes and spectators, including four in Edmonton and area, are receiving funding from the provincial government. The province announced Thursday that the upcoming national and international competitions, along with seven that have already been held this year, are using $1.3 million in funding through Alberta’s Major Sport Events grant program. This summer’s events receiving the funding are climbing’s North American Cup Series from June 26-28, the Edmonton Athletics Invitational on July 12, the U17 Women’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championships from July 29 to Aug. 2 in Calgary and the Canadian BMX Championships from Aug. 29-30 in St. Albert. The province said the summer competitions are expected to draw more than 12,000 athletes, coaches, officials and spectators.
