Where 10 new Edmonton schools announced in the 2026 Alberta budget will be located

Edmonton schools are full, with some needing to hold enrollment lotteries. The province hopes new schools announced Monday will alleviate the pressure.

The Alberta government on Monday announced the locations of 10 new schools in Edmonton being funded through this year’s provincial budget.

Four of the projects belong to the Edmonton Public School Board, three to Edmonton Catholic Schools and three to the francophone Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord.

The 10 projects, which include eight new schools and two replacements, come in addition to 27 already underway in the city and will create room for 8,400 students, the province said on Monday morning.

“I’m confident these new spaces will help address the pressure,” Education Minister Demetrios Nicholaides told reporters at a media conference. “There’s still more that needs to be done. That’s why we have 161 projects underway across the province.”

The 161 active school projects include 40 new ones announced last month in the Alberta government’s 2026 budget. Fourteen of them are in Calgary. The province says the number of primary and secondary students in Alberta has increased by 80,000 over the last three years.

The Edmonton Public schools, all of them new, include two at the planning stage – an elementary facility in the north-side Crystallina Nera neighbourhood and an elementary/junior high building in southwest River’s Edge – and two at the design stage: elementary/junior highs in southeast Aster and in southwest Stillwater.

Two of Edmonton Catholic’s schools are new and are at the planning stage: a high school in southwest Windermere/Glenridding Heights and an elementary/junior high in northeast Kirkness. The other is a replacement, also at the planning stage, for the elementary/junior high St. Alphonsus School in north-central Parkdale.

The three Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord projects are all at the planning stage, two of them are new: an Early-Childhood-to-Grade-6 school in the southwest and an elementary on the north side. The other is a replacement for the west-end elementary École Jean-Claude Mahé.
