‘We’re able to get one step closer’: Candy Cane Lane collects thousands in food, money for Edmonton’s Food Bank

Edmonton’s Food Bank says fewer donations were made at Candy Cane Lane this year compared to the average, but received a boost in monetary donations at $24,000.

“Despite the weather, people showed up.”

That’s the message the spokesperson of Edmonton’s Food Bank, Tamisan Bencz-Knight, received after seeing the donations from YEG Candy Cane Lane.

People could donate non-perishable food items during their experience of the annual tradition of strolling the lane of extraordinary holiday light displays at 148 Street from 100 Avenue to 92 Avenue.

“The weather was really cold, then it warmed up, then it rained, so people didn’t want to leave their house. Regardless, it was excellent,” said Bencz-Knight.

About 5,200 kilograms of food was donated, which was less than anticipated for Edmonton’s Food Bank. However, the YEG Candy Cane Lane group had a different approach to help keep support strong for those in need this winter season.

“The group put up QR codes down the lane so that people can make financial contributions. If they couldn’t or they forgot their food donation, they could make a monetary donation, so we were able to raise over $24,000 online,” said Bencz-Knight.

The campaign for the food bank is expected to run until this Friday, with the goal of raising $4.5 million and 300,000 kilograms of food. It’s a goal the food bank hopes to reach as demand continues to grow.

“We’re looking at over 43,000 people each month and it’s been progressively going up,” added Bencz-Knight.

The Edmonton Food Bank faced many challenges through 2025, but made note of two things they’re grateful for - community support and volunteer work.

“We’re not government funded, we are 100 per cent funded by the community to keep our doors open,” said Bencz-Knight.

“Despite the weather, even when it’s cold, even with the slush, even when it’s raining in the winter, our volunteers show up with smiles on and they keep the doors going.”
