Warm today, but a mid-week cooldown is coming

It’s still spring. Temperatures got close to 20 C in Edmonton on Sunday and should hit 20 or 21 C today, but there’s another spring swing on the way for later this week.

Cooler air will drop back in from the north and knock daytime highs back into single digits for Wednesday-Saturday.

It’s setting up to be a fairly active week across the province.

Today: Morning sun will give way to some afternoon clouds and there’s a trough of low pressure that could set off a few scattered showers in the Edmonton and Red Deer areas late this afternoon/early this evening.

That chance of showers shifts into east-central Alberta this evening.

The better chance for some rain this week (in Edmonton and area) comes Tuesday night and Wednesday.

We’ll get some increasing cloud late in the day Tuesday as a low-pressure system develops in northwestern Alberta.

That will likely pull some showers or periods of rain through the Edmonton region Tuesday night and there may be a fairly extensive band of rain that develops all the way east through Lloydminster Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning.

Temperatures will hit the mid teens in Edmonton Tuesday, and then the cooler air drops in for Wednesday.

There will be some steadier rain over parts of central Alberta, while other areas just get some occasional showers.

As of right now, it looks more like showers (as opposed to heavy, steady rain) for the Edmonton area Wednesday.

Further north, the High Level and Fort McMurray areas get some snow on Wednesday as the low-pressure system moves east.

The Bonnyville/Lloydminster areas get a chance of snow late Wednesday/early Thursday.

In Western Alberta, there’s a chance of some flurries in the Peace Country Wednesday and mixed precipitation through the foothills (with heavier snow at higher elevations in the mountain parks).

OK... back to the Edmonton situation:

Temperatures will hit the mid teens in Edmonton Tuesday, and then the cooler air drops in for Wednesday.

So, wet and a high in the 5 to 10 C range Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday’s looking to be the coolest day of the week (high in the 3 to 7 C range) AND there’s a slight chance of some pockets of mixed precipitation.

Drier and sunnier for Friday/Saturday with daytime highs still on the “cool” side. We’ll have morning lows in the -2 to -6 C range and afternoon highs around 8 C.

Looking longer-term, highs should return to the mid teens early next week.

Bottom line: Warm today and Tuesday, but a cool spell comes in for the last half of the week with some showers Tuesday night/Wednesday and then another warming trend kicks in.
