Here’s what’s happening in Alberta’s capital city the last weekend of the summer break. Entertainment The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is putting on free concerts in Churchill Square on Friday and Saturday. The orchestra will perform hits from beloved Disney movies. American country singer-songwriter Lainey Wilson is performing at Rogers Place on Friday as part of her “Whirlwind World Tour.” Tickets were still on sale for $77 as of noon on Friday. Tickets are also still on sale to American comedian Jo Koy’s show at Rogers Place on Saturday. Seats that were available on Friday started at $67. Metro Cinema will be hosting its annual movie poster sale on Sunday. The theatre says some posters will be priced as low as $5 because it needs to clear out overstock. Burton Cummings and Tom Cochrane will take the stage in the Ice District fan park on Monday. General seating, which is first come first serve, is priced at $96. Sports The Edmonton Elks will be hosted by the Calgary Stampedeers for the Labour Day Classic on Monday. Although the Elks are on a winning streak, the Stampeders just beat the top-ranked Saskatchewan Roughriders. Community The Alberta legislature will host a number of free family friendly events for Alberta Day on Sunday, including a local market, kids zone, live music by the Prairie States, and an evening drone show. The 4th Hong Kong Carnival will take place on Saturday in Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park. The event runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will consist of mahjong and kangal chess demonstrations, a cultural display, and street food. The city is hosting a free family photo day at the City Hall Plaza fountain on Monday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Bouncy castles, a balloon animal station, ping pong and giant games will also be set up there. Last chance… Explore the Giza Plateau, the Great Pyramid of Giza and Egyptian culture virtually at West Edmonton Mall until Monday. Or, use VR to explore the International Space Station and see exclusive footage from Space Explorers: The ISS Experience. Tickets to both are 20 per cent off for the last weekend. Edmonton’s pools will remain open for the long weekend, but close on Tuesday, save Queen Elizabeth Pool, which will remain open for a combination of public swim, lane swim and rentals until Sept. 14. The Canada Strong Pass, which provides free or discounted entry to some of the nation’s best tourist destinations, including national parks and museums, will remain in effect until Monday. The long weekend will also see the conclusion of the Dragon Food Tour, a guided culinary tour of Edmonton’s Chinatown, and Afternoon Sound Sessions on 124 Street. For the last weekend of the latter, folk musician Jessica Heine will be performing at Helen Nolan park at 4 p.m.
